What is a Sleep study?

A Sleep Study is done to diagnose Sleep Apnoea. There are various diagnostic tools available in the industry, and they are rated by levels based on how comprehensive these tools are in capturing sleep data. The most comprehensive is Level 1, which is used in laboratory sleep studies. Our sleep laboratories are located at THE OASIS | Adelaide, North Eastern Community Hospital, and Glenelg Community Hospital.

A level 2 follows, which is an ambulatory sleep study often used in a home setting is close to the Level 1 study, but without overnight video monitoring that’s done in a sleep laboratory. We only conduct Level 1 and 2 studies because they are the most comprehensive diagnostic tools available. This is to ensure we pick up the required number of signals to be able to provide a quality sleep study report. Anything lower in levels can act as a tool to screen for Sleep Apnoea, but will not offer enough information for us to pick up on the existence of other sleep disorders or at times not able to completely rule out Sleep Apnoea. Our level 2 sleep studies are Medicare-claimable for eligible patients.

We offer various types of sleep studies catered to your needs and suitability for the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and other sleep disorders. This also includes different set-up methods to suit everyone.

We offer various types of sleep studies

We offer three different set-up services for Home Sleep Studies.

Remote Set-up with After-hours Support

Formulated for those who prefer a DIY approach in the comfort of their own home. With the remote set-up, you will pick up your sleep study kit from our clinic with a manual and an accompanying video to help you conduct your own set-up at home. But it doesn’t end there. To guarantee the accuracy and success of your set-up, we will provide after-hours support with our specialised technician who will be able to check through your set-up and sign you off for your peace of mind.

In-Clinic Set-up

For those who may not be suitable for remote set-ups, e.g. those with mobility issues, technology restrictions, etc. we do offer in-clinic set-ups. On the day of the set-up at the appointed time, you can come into our clinic for our trained technician to set up the sleep study kit on you. You will then go home for the night and sleep overnight with the kit on you.

In-Home Visit and Set-up

We offer home visitations after hours where our trained technicians will visit your home in the evening to set you up with the sleep study kit. Once complete, the technician will leave you to it and you can go about your normal routine before retiring to bed when you are sleepy.

Our sleep laboratories at THE OASIS | Adelaide, North Eastern Community Hospital, and Glenelg Community Hospital. In addition to investigating Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, in-laboratory sleep studies are also recommeded for anyone:

  • Wanting a sleep study to be conducted with the piece of mind that comes from having real-time monitoring so there is never any chance of a study failing due to sensors falling off
  • Suspected of having any sleep disorder other than simply obstructive sleep apnoea (eg complex sleep apnoea, narcolepsy/idiopathic hypersomnia, restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movement disorder, parasomnia, insomnia).
  • Who is on therapy for a sleep disorder (eg CPAP) but wants it assessed because it is not as effective as it used to be
  • Who wants a dedicated and controlled environment free from family or household disruption

Estimates from research studies suggest sleepiness is responsible for approximately 20% of motor vehicle accidents, and associated severe injuries and/or fatalities. While most sleepiness-related accidents occur in younger drivers with acute or chronic sleep deprivation combined with driving at vulnerable times of the day/night, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is likely to play a more dominant role in the accident profile of middle-aged drivers. Untreated OSA is shown to be associated with a 2 – 7 fold increased risk of motor vehicle accidents as well as an impaired driving performance.

The diagnosis and CPAP treatment of OSA has continued to tackle the problem – Someone diagnosed with OSA and complies regularly with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy will likely have a markedly reduced motor vehicle accident risk and be safe to drive. However, the tendency to fall asleep at the wheel is a subjective assessment and may not be reliable.

Which is where the Driving Simulator comes in. It mimics various road and traffic scenarios, as well as environmental conditions to measure the indices of driving performance such as steering deviation (the ability to maintain lane position), speed control (the ability to maintain speed with in-the-target range), number of crashes and reaction times to the appearance of obstacles on the road.

This service is conducted by THE OASIS | Adelaide.

Speak to your GP about your symptoms regarding OSA.

2

Get your GP to fill out and sign off the referral form and send it to us.

3

Depending on your condition or doctor’s recommendation, we may set you up with a laboratory sleep study or set you up in the comfort of your own home.*

4

Return the device the following morning and we will analyse your sleep data. Your report will be sent off to your referring GP as well as the Respiratory & Sleep Physician.

5

You can re-visit us with regards to treatment options for you depending on your results.

*If you have been booked in for a home sleep study, we will also discuss with you the various set-up services available at that point in time – whether it is remote set-up, in-clinic set-up or an in-home set-up.
